I have used double-sided archival mounting vellum (easier to remove than double sided tape) and attached fine sand paper to my thinnest mixing spatulas, the tamiya sort.

Works quite well for me.

Texture. I haven't used the clay yet, though I am keen to. The paste is what you would have if you thinned the sculpt down significantly. When the paste does eventually cure it is also softer will still take an impression, such as a fingernail. The sculpt sands beautifully, very much like styrene an...

I'm getting something you might call ghosting on my Apollo 27, that I appear dead set against finishing. In my case I think I'm just looking at the difference in textures, between styrene and the semi-porous Aves. I haven't yet gone back and sanded with successively finer grits, but I anticipate tha...

I may have mentioned in the past, but of the Aves, the Super White has an extremely fine grain and bright white ( go figure ) color. It beats all the others hands down.

Aptly! Thinner consistencies will be more delicate and may take longer to cure. But I have done just as you've described with consistent positive results.

Agreed. Whatever savings you might find in the initial purchase price will, inevitably, be lost in time, clean up, more materials, damaged parts, and sanity.

Need advice on mold construciton

With the population of GK'ers here, I thought it wise to consult with people who might have been in a similar bind. I need the pieces pictured here for a kit and have been casting sets for each kit. It seemed more practical to cast them in order to guaranty the dimensions, with a bonus of not drivin...

Ah but look again, it may bear a superficial similarity to a CNC, but mounted on those axis is an ABS extruder. The Makerbot builds your object up instead of milling it down. I think the comparison to an Altair is quite apt.

Wire Glue is intended for just that, but mileage varies.

There's also conductive epoxy but it tends to be absurdly expensive for the quantity sold.

Dymo embossed label tape will do the trick quite nicely. The older tape is better but even the stuff now sold at office supply stores will work. I bought a 3pack for about $6 the other day.

Bondo UV curing putty

I just found this today while hunting around locally for the 3M blue glazing putty. It is "Bondo UV Glazing & Spot Putty" (#930) and I wonder how it compares to the Tamiya stuff that has gotten remarkably difficult to get in the states. It was cheap, less than $7, but i don't know yet ...

problematic resin casting

Despite a bit of practice, I am having trouble my resin casts lately. The resin has a 30 min pot life. I'm pulling from a shallow open face mold and get numerous small bubbles forming close to the detail surface. Close to, mind you, but not actually breaking the detail. If I sand, at all , I expose ...

We've probably seen the same video. A Rubbing Compound was used. Tamiya actually offers 4 grades. It works just like sandpaper. Any quality polishing compound (even toothpaste, to a degree) will work. You just need to get the surface smooth enough to restore transparency.

Scott, I say stay the course with respect to those engine cowls. You can glue them such that they are more circular. It will smooth water or alcohol, but the usefulness is multiplied ten-fold if you use Safety Solvent.
