Re: Tamiya handy drill
I too have one of these, and am quite impressed with it. The only thing I did was add a little more grease to the cogs etc as the little tube of grease supplied with the kit was, well, little... Perfect for drilling plastic, perfect speed and does not spin too fast as to melt it. The only gripe I ha...

Re: Best clear plastic??
You might find this article helpful from IPMS stockholm https://www.ipmsstockholm.org/magazine/2002/08/stuff_eng_tech_moulding_canopies.htm it recommends PET-g over clear PS sheets (#6) and definitely against blister pack plastic mostly on being hard to work with due to it being optimized for indus...

Re: Instrument Panels
I just print on normal white paper, and with an led behind it, the light very easily shines through. I don't use Kristal Klear or any other stuff to simulate glass, I just place some clear plastic over it. The dials in this pic are only 3mm and 4mm in diameter. This pic is extremely zoomed in to sho...

I seem to remember that there already exists an RC Seaquest sub. I think I've seen it on youtube. Try there first, I think I saw it when I was researching the Monogram Seaquest Stinger model.

Re: Adding a Pot to the Tamiya Handy Drill?
Don't bother. It's a very handy drill as it is. The speed is reasonably slow and I'll say it's just about perfect for drilling through plastic. That's what it was designed to do, and it does it very well. Everything inside it is plastic, even the gears, so making it spin faster would shorten the lif...

Re: RPM or CFM?
Yes....I tend to agree with the CFM being more important.....however....if you want a quieter fan, then RPM would probably be what you're after. Lower RPM with higher CFM would have more pitch on the blades which would tend to slap the air....causing excessive noise. On the other hand, higher RPM wi...

Re: Any experience with EL wire?
You can get it on ebay for about $4. Runs on 3 volts, (2 x AA batteries), and no heat emitting from it. Different colours too. I bought a few and was thinking of using it for some UFO models, but have yet to do it. Really cool stuff....

If you're familiar with this kit, you will immediately notice that this has been extensively modified. Too many modifications to mention here, but suffice to say, I did A LOT. Maybe I should post this WIP build up in "On The Bench"...... Well.....I did. I've started "PLAN 9 FROM OUTE...

OK guys, time for an update on how my dials turned out. To say that I'm thrilled with the results is an understatement. I just noticed that my original post link to my photo is dead, so here is what I started out with: https://www.flickr.com/photos/109040522@N02/46704991335/in/album-7215770656162610...

Re: Micro Kristal (not so) Klear !!!
Thanks for the comments and tips guys. But I've solved my problem....yeah, I pulled out the dials and dashboard, and started again. :| I'm using the Kristal Klear to glue new dials onto a sheet of clear plastic, face down, so the clear plastic is the 'lens' when flipped over. Hopefully this will loo...

Well, I've got this thing hanging in front of the heater at the moment, so hopefully it would dry a bit and actually do what it's supposed to do...turn Kristal Klear...!! Micro Kristal (not so) Klear !!!
Hi all, I've been real busy totally modifying an old Lindberg UFO model, the same as used in the movie "Plan 9 From Outer Space". Really happy with the modifications I did. A lot of led and fibre optic lighting etc. I'm in a bit of a rush to finish this for the Sandown Model Expo which is ...

That is excellent work. Love the paint and details. Now if you can perhaps add a cuppla wings, some rocket engines hanging off the rear, maybe some NASA decals and some landing gear, it will feel right at home at a sci-fi forum...!!!

How's the hair spay one work?I've heard about it. Go on youtube and search it . Heaps of tutorials about it. I've also heard of using Vaseline, (or thick grease). Apply small amounts to wherever you want the base colour to show, spray on the topcoat, then simply wipe away the vaseline. Paint won't ...

Re: Adhesive-backed Foil
I've also heard of another technique. You cut a small piece of BMF to cover the part you want chrome. There is a very small amount of overlap around the part. Stick the BMF down over the part. You then proceed to paint the car body, (for example), then use thinner to very gently dissolve the paint o...

If you are ensconcing a part into a big wad and then trying to cut it open, then it is just not going to work. Ummm, yep, that's what I've been doing. I'm trying to cast up some rocket thrusters, so I'm filling in the inside empty section with the bluestuff, then when it sets, I put more bluestuff ...

Re: Extracting paint from a spray can
Or you can try placing the can and a sharp screwdriver in a sturdy clear plastic bag and pierce it using a sharp blow from a hammer. If there's no pressure, you can simply empty the paint into a container. If there is pressure, at least the paint explodes inside the bag and not all over you. You can...

Re: using "bluestuff" for first time
OK, I tried the bluestuff, and it was a total failure. Not just once, not even twice. I reckon I tried about 4 or 5 times before giving up. The problem is its too hard when it sets, so I couldn't even cut it with a new blade. For a simple one part mold, it would work great, but not for a two part. I...
