Have one just like it, only 30 years old. Use to hold my knife sharpener, flatten tube, shape sheet metal or just hold things tight. Use it all the time for modeling and other stuff.

The one thing I can say is CLEAN the brass. I use a wire wheel in my Dremel to clean it. You want the brass to sparkle before you start solder. Then be sure to heat it red hot cool it then solder the two peices together.

Just my way.

Since at that scale canvas would appear smooth, and you want somthing flexible but sturdy, try rubber. I would think helium ballons would be heavy enough to survive.
Just a though, never tried for this particular combination before.
