I just read that one thing this morning, but it sounds affordable/doable. Does it potentially strengthen the plastic?

It's been my experience that spray paint and vinyl don't mix(or mix too well).

Bleach. Soak the piece or entire sprue, in a shallow pan of 'clorox' overnite, (on the back porch to avoid the stank) and the chroming on the plastic will be gone.
