Removing Super Glue (CA)

Got a question about techniques, materials or other aspects of physically building a model? This is the place to ask.

Removing Super Glue (CA)

Post by ArcadeKidd »

Hi All,

I've managed to spill some CA on a model and
was wondering what methods are available to
remove it?

It's on the side of a 1/32 P-51 with raised
detailing (rivets) so sanding is the last resort.

Any help appreciated!!

Thanks,
AK

You could try Super Glue De-Bonder, but I don't know if it will attack the plastic or not. Test it first!

You should be able to pick that up at your local hardware store.

CA debonder is just acetone, which will eat styrene. Unfortunately you may have to use it or try light sanding, or both. Spilling CA is never fun!

Actually many forms of styrene are not effected by pure acetone. try getting some from the hardware store and test it on the sprue that the model was on. if it does not melt the styrene then go at the model in small patches lightly with q-tips changing the tips out often.

Cheers,

If there is no clear parts on it yet, try putting the model in the freezer for about 4 hours. The CA might "pop" off with the use of a small scraper.

DISCLAIMER: I have not tried this, I have just heard about the freezer method. Try at your own risk!

I've used a few debonders, Zap-a-gap & Mercury, on styrene w/o issue.
