Need some input... (on colors for my Ironman model)

Post by Mark Yungblut »

Hey guys,

Just got this in the mail so I thought I would distract myself a bit from the real life stuff goin on in my family.

My question is would you use a dark brown, say burnt umber, as a wash in the gold areas? I plan to use an alizarin crimson wash to fill the panel lines etc on the metallic red.

I would definitely go with a more red brown like burnt umber, red always makes gold look richer, whereas a more greenish brown would make it icky.

That's a cool model. Is is prepainted or bare?

Its a white metal kit from Knight Models. They have some other Marvel stuff and Starwars stuff on the way this summer.

Wow, that's a pretty substantial model then. I'm interesting in seeing how it turns out.

How would ultramarine look over the gold area panel lines? Just thinking it may look more like natural light and recessed...or it may all go horribly wrong.

It's kind of interesting to see how adjacent colors affect the main color. I was just playing around with it and here's gold with burnt umber:

And then here's the same color of gold with ultramarine:

You can see how the blue kind of tints the gold green, while the brown gives it a richer, brassy look.

I guess it just depends on which way you want to go with the gold. Of course there's always a black wash or even a deep red.
