Scratched surfaces

Post by Captain Riker »

During my TOS-E build I scratched the surface of the saucer pretty well while sanding. I'm talking small scratches, nothing deep enough to need putty.

The first coat of primer seemed to mask some of it, and polishing with a 3200 grit gives me a smoothe finish.

Question is, should I sand down and keep going until I get a clean surface again (progressivly go from rough to fine paper?) or will the primer and subsequent paint cover over it eventualy?

when ever I have that problem I apply a bit of putty and then after it is dry I sand using rough on 'down' to 1500 grit. at least I think it's 1500 any way.
Normal?? What is normal??

another alternative would be to re-prime with Mr. Sufacer 500, do a light sanding then maybe hit it again with Mr. Surfacer 1000. Since you've already primed, you may be able to get away with just a coat of the 1000.

Reprime, lightly sand starting at 600-800 grit used wet and work your way up to to around 1500-2000 grit.

Inspect the surface to see if the scratches are gone and repeat the above as necessary.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try sanding first then Mr. Surfacer.

Being a newb the rest of you would probably expect this but the Mr. Surfacer product seems to be working very well in early experiance.

I got spray cans of 500 and 1000. I took Pat's advice and one shot of MS1000 seems to have made the scratching dissapear. Great stuff so far.

i've found other uses but I may have to get the liquid form...

Thanks again.
