nav & formation light question for R2 refit

I have run into a delemma as to how to position the LEDS to get the optimum lighting for each nav lite and formation lite.
I have tried using fiber optics but I don't get the right brightness that I am looking for.
Should I not use the 3mm leds or use the small surface mount leds and place them on top of the clear plastic parts themselves
I greatly appreciate any and all kind of help.

I sanded the lens flat on 3mm LED's, then attached the kit supplied part to the top. Worked out quite nicely.

or you can also use 1.8mm leds and just black out the square base that they sit on.
