Glueing hard shinny plastic?

Post by asenna »

I am trying to glue together a piece on a toy that is made from a hard shiny black plastic. I tried CA, epoxy and Tenax. No joy. Suggestions?

Try roughing up the surface if possible.

It may be one of the more inert plastics or it could be something like a hard PVC which needs a seriously hot glue or CA.

Hard and shiny usually means acrylic- I've had good luck using plexiglas cement or Ambroid pro-weld. Look for a thin cement with a lot of methylene chloride in it. Sanding can help. Can you leave a fingerprint on the plastic after using a solvent cement?

Yes but acrylic loves CA (cyanoacrylate) so it can't be that. I was thinking PVC or some phenolic resin. Some phenolic stuff doesn't like anything but PVC can be glued with CA if roughened a bit. Or you can try PVC glue if you're gluing 2 like substances.

Dunno. Probably melt it.

edit... yes it would. High percentages of MEK & acetone. If the styrene sheet was thick enough it'd probably survive it.
