Could I please have some input on wash formula's ? I've read many and have recently tried one by Paul Boyer from FSM which comprised paint/thinner/dish detergent. If this is what people use, could you recomend ratio's ? My first time "At Bat" was less then steller
Thanks
Sean

Depends on what kind of wash.
Oil washes require odorless turpenoid (unless you like the smell of petroleum distillates) and an oil paint. Thin about 40-80 parts turpenoid to oil paint.
Sludge washes, also known as pastel washes, need water, pastel powder, and perhaps a touch of surficant. Mix into a usable sludge and apply.
Both are to be applied to a gloss coat, acrylic for the oils, virtually anything for the sludge.

Soap is a poor surfactant, JetDry is much, much better.Pat Amaral wrote:Nice explanation, Robb. Maybe you could explain what a surficant is. Did you mean surfactant? If so, then I assume you mean a few drops of dish soap. What other examples appropriate to modeling are there?
Thanks in advance,

Oil paint (usually black, Paynes gray, or Burnt Umber) mixed very, very thin with turpentine or odorless turpenoid, get a nice pointy brush and touch it gently to a panel line. Capillary action will draw the mix in darkening your pane line.Ace Airspeed wrote:Can someone explain to me just how to do an oil wash?
I've been out of this game for 18 years and I'm lacking in the "new" basics.
