3M Blye Acryl Discontinued?!

Hi guys,

I've finally gone to NAPA and tried getting a tube of the wonderful 3M blue acrylic putty... only to find out it's been discontinued.

It seems product the 1lb tube of 05964 blue putty has been discontinued and replaced with a 3lb can of red putty.

Anyone know if it's the same stuff?

The 3M™ Acryl-Red Glazing Putty, 05966 is also obsolete.

Yes, it's true. But this stuff I got has the same number as the blue (05964), but it's pink. I was wondering if it's the same. It seems much better than the crappy Bondo (and Squadron) stuff, but I have no basis of comparison to the old product.

so which product is not obsolete here in the US and where can I get a tube/can of this acrylic putty, and how much does it cost on average??

The green isn't list as obsolete in the US. Runs about $22. I'd check body repair supply shops, automotive paint stores, the usual.

Well, the 3M guys said it's being phased out in the US as well, just taking longer. Apparently all the body shops are using the two-part putties that are more compatible with the water-based paint for current cars. So they consolidated the putties into a single "classic" putty, which is what I got.

Still not sure it's the same stuff.

Kylwell, have you used this stuff? Does it have a sweet, toluene-y smell to it?

No I haven't but a few guys (in the club) use the red or blue (IIRC). I'll have to check around and see if anybody's had much luck with it.

According to the MSDS the Green is missing the CELLULOSE ACETATE BUTYRATE & XYLENE that is present in the blue.

I've been using the Blue for years and I really like it. It dries fast and can be sanded glass smooth - good stuff.
