Ralph McQuarrie Y-Wing

Post by Darth Homer »

I think I'm going back to models after a couple of figures for my next project but it's not going to be a kit. I'm going to do a scratch built / kit bashed version of Ralph McQuarrie's original design for the Star Wars Y-Wing. I found some pictures on line and decided to do it starting with a couple of pop cans for engines. I'm planning on making it around 1/32 scale so I can use the cockpit and pilot figure from a plane. As usual I'll be posting progress pictures when I get started.

Great idea! I was just thinking the other day that someone should make a kit of the McQuarrie Y-Wing. Maybe once you complete this it will stir up enough interest for someone to release one. If not then I will have to follow in your footsteps and scratch one myself.

Good luck, cant wait to see it!

I agree , it's a great idea . The Y-Wing has always been a favourite of mine and there's something about McQuarrie's early designs that have a very attractive "nuts and bolts" feel to them . I'll follow this thread with much interest !

Actually that design was done by Colin Cantwell who did the original concept models. Mcquarrie used Cantwells Y-Wing mock-up as reference for his paintings.

It's be fun to get a kit made of this. Since there's a McQuarrie X-Wing and A-Wing.
