Got a question about techniques, materials or other aspects of physically building a model? This is the place to ask.

drilling for FO strands

Post by Matty1973 »

Hi all,

what method do you use for drilling holes for FO strands?

i have a rotary tool but i am pretty sure the RPM's in this will get the drill bits too hot and then melt.

i remember when i built the Enterprise D with FO the kit came with a battery operated drill.

While not drilling for fiber I still needed to drill at low speeds. What I did was get some extension cord pieces, a dimmer and a junction box and made my own speed controller. DO NOT DO THIS IF YOUR DREMEL ALREADY HAS A SPEED CONTROLLER BUILT IN. Now I can dial my Dremel down to very low speeds. If you get a hold of one of the older dimmers, the ones that are true rheostats, they work even better for this kind of stuff. The new ones just "chop" the tops off of the waves instead of actually dialing back the wattage. They work good enough BUT if you really want precision, get a rheostat.

I hope this helps.

Kenny
