Frigging SCORE, BABY!!!

Attended Squadron Scalefest yesterday, over in Mesquite Texas...and hit the vendor's area like a hurricane hits Miami beach. Notable Scores for scratching? How about a Shuttle launch tower complex, for only sixty bucks? Purchased TWO leopold guns, in 1/72 scale (hasegawa) and paid twenty for one, and eighteen for the other... Tamiya 1/32 Phantom, for only seventy bucks. You can't find'em that cheap in the stores, or online. How about Moebius's Big 1/128 (odd scale isn't it?) Seaview, for a mere sixty dollars? YEAH... Now THAT is one of the main reasons I go to conventions like that. I also scored a Hasegawa F-20 Tigershark...(I've been looking high and low for one!) and a couple of really COOL Resin Sci Fi models...which I'll build as they are, and share with "the crew" on here. I paid full price for NOTHING... as haggling is the order of the day. I found a cool 1/35 scale Landwasserschlepper...german WW2 amphibious vehicle, that has a lot of cool parts in it. I looked for 1/144 Airfix Apollo Saturn V kits...but nobody had one. I saw just ONE Saturn V by Revell...in 1/96 scale... but no way was it worth 90.00. Hell, for just a little more, I can purchase Dragon's 1/72 Monster Saturn V kit... and I think that's what I'd rather do. I also got a few 1/72 kits of Hummvee's and a 1/72 scale hover APC kit in resin.... Twenty bucks, couldn't walk away. All in all? I'm pleased with the day's kit acquisition totals. I spent some money, but I got serious bang for my buck. I've also been bidding on people's "bits boxes" online... a terrific source of detail parts...if you get a good look at what there IS in that box. Sprue? I have all I need, and then some. I like "parts is parts" boxes... I've purchased old helicopter kits, just for detail parts, and paid a buck for them... tank parts, the same way. THere's just no telling what use you are going to have for a kit bit...until you need one.

I'm a pack rat. Though I haven't actually built a lot of models, I've been saving anything and everything that might work on a custom spaceship or whatever, since I was a kid. I've just been going through some of the boxes piled in the enclosed back porch:
You know those little round plastic containers that toys come in from bubble-gum machines? Yep, a box of those.
Radio tubes.
Cigar tubes.
Little pieces of wood and plastic.
Wires, circuit boars, electronic components.
Metal and plastic brackets and other misc. hardware and pieces from every small appliance I ever threw out.
Plastic from packages that's shaped in the contour of whatever came in the package, possibly for the glass dome or fairing on a spaceship.
Old toys and models, some from when I was a kid 40 years ago.
C02 cartridges and shells.
Alarm clocks (the face plates could make a glass dome for a space colony or something).
Junk.
I'm going to try to build something in the next two weeks (before Starfest in Denver). Hopefully it may turn out well enough to post pictures.

You mean, part #8? The Intake Screen? The folks at STIHL are proud of their product, based on their prices. Maybe instead try a crappy small fan guard from Wal-Mart; their Optimus 7" Personal Table Fan is 20 bucks.

Anybody else remember when L'eggs pantyhose came in plastic egg-shaped containers?
(IIRC the domed caps on the nacelles on the Y-wing were made from L'eggs containers)

speaking of collecting junk... While most kids wanted to get at the toy in the (breakfast) cereal box, I was one of those kids more interested in cereal box (for use as building material). Other items that were utilized were cardboard cores from toilet tissue, paper towel rolls, aluminum foil rolls, wax paper rolls, etc. Flat sections (typically the lid) of foam egg cartons and foam take-out containers made for great materials for constructing simple gliders. Foam packing materials from home appliance or electronics were useful too. Part of my habit of keeping toothpaste caps dates back from those days (where I often utilized them in my builds as "jet engine nozzle"). I also keep some nowadays to replace the flip-top style (because the flip-top style has a frustrating tendency to pop open inside travel bag - resulting in a gooey mess).
The base and spindle from left over from spindle packs of recordable CD-ROM and DVD-ROM are useful for use as bases. Broken CD jewel will give you nice 5"x5" pieces of clear styrene. 3.5" floppy diskettes that would otherwise be discarded could be taken apart and its pieces "re-purposed" -- there's a nice spring in there as well as the metal shutter yields some nice building material too.
