How to fix the 500 Error

If you are getting a 500 Error when accessing the forum, I found that using https instead of http seems to fix the problem, but the server is a bit slow to respond. This has been reported to work for other users as well.

It seems to work for me too. I still get the SQL error but at least I'm not getting the 500 error every time.

Thanks for that - it works for me as well. Only thing I have noticed is that if you hit the "Home" button, it takes you back to the http: address, and the 500 errors reappear. Using the back arrow button keeps you on the https: address.

Actually ignore this post.

It seemed that clicking on "Board Index" rather than "Home" resolved the insecure connection issue (http vs https) that seems tied to the 500 error.

Curiously when doing this very post I noticed that I didn't have a secure lock icon on the URL bar, implying I was not doing https...and yet I got no 500 error. Go figure. So, while the "home" link has tended to give me 500 errors more or less consistently, it sort of worked now (why???). Suggest keep using https with the forum addresses. In general once you start with it, following hyperlinks on the forum index works fine.

For reasons beggaring understanding, it works fine now in its original format.

Feels like it was enabling Secure Sockets Layer (SSL/https) that solved it. SSL was probably in there all along, just not enabled at the boards gateway, and more importantly, our browser bookmarks.

Looking through the different topic sections I noticed that a thread dated 2011 and I know people have done threads there just in the past year, the title of said section is ask your question for SSM here. The problems seem to be getting worse.

The post in that section is an announcement which never gets deleted - Is it possible that the threads which were created just got deleted by the inactivity system?

Most of the topic areas here have (in theory) a 30 day (or so) deletion date for thread for inactivity. This does not affect certain select areas, such as anything under "announcements" (as mentioned above), nor any of the Modeling Basics area. There are a few additional ones outside of that such as the "Special Purpose" or the "Wonderfest" topics. This topic area itself is static. There are a few other exceptions here and there, but they feels a bit random. In bygone days, one could force the issue by turning the thread into a poll, whether that made sense or not, but I think that feature has gone away, although some of the "poll" threads are still there.

The topic has been brought up before (I think by me most recently back in 2017 viewtopic.php?p=1703029#p1703029). This can only be handled by settings to the forum software itself so really can only be changed by admin.

At the time various suggestions have been made to make some areas more permanent such as "On the Bench" permanent as it often can have extensive detailed build threads that can be just as useful as references in the Modeling Basics area. Given the general decrease in activity overall in the forum, I think that it would not be unreasonable for deletion dates to be extended as far as 6mo to 12 for some areas.

It makes more sense to retitle that old "purging and deletion" section and continue such a discussion there as opposed to here (the 500 error).

That section has had no activity for 30 plus days in the past and it has never gone back to an old thread from years ago, not that I've noticed anyway.
