I don't know. In the old days people used to put the receiver beside the phone when they didn't want to be bothered.
Excuses, excuses. :D I think it should be someone who knows John or at least has met him at say wonderfest and has talked with him which is something I've never done. How about John P.??
No, I don't know them personally and haven't met them. I'm way too shy to call them cold.

What is going on here?

We have a forum that apparently is on its last legs, abandoned by the moderators and we have someone who wants to reach out and help people in this forum being criticized for doing it?

Anyone can use and enjoy both forums, there is no 'draining of members'. A forum is what it is because of the people who use it. People complain about the disappearance of forums to Facebook yet disdain the offers from another because it's not like the one they are used to.

The fact is that all efforts to try and reach the people in charge to find out what is going on have failed. A single reply from them can solve a lot of problems. If they are tired or unable to continue to moderate this forum and fix the problems with it then please let someone who is willing do it.

All the criticisms about SSM being better than AST and siphoning off members won't mean squat when this site disappears without a word of explanation.

i'm going to ignore saturn.

i'll just sum up what i'm offering.

my offer to all:
you are welcome to join ast. we use the same forum software as ssm. no-one is replacing ssm. it's just another option. several ssm members have already joined.

my first offer to the owner:
i can fix your forum. 14 years of php and phpbb knowhow is at your disposal. no conditions. free of charge.

my second offer to the owner:
i will be happy to get you in touch with some really amazing php techies if you prefer that route.

Back a couple of weeks ago you sent me a PM informing me you had registered me on AST WITHOUT ASKING FOR MY PERMISSION, so kindly delete my account from AST. I am perfectly capable of registering myself which I choose not to do at this time. Can't help but wonder how many other SSM members you've registered without their permission.

oh for gods sake. calm down.

the only thing i have 'registered' is adding a username (which you do not own). nothing else. some members reported problems with the captcha, so i sent them an invite, which a few accepted.

i feel some members are using me as a way to vent pent up frustration. i'm doing what i can to provide options for all concerned.

I also got that AST spam in my inbox. It breaks one of the principal rules of SM:
What Happens on Other Forums Stays There
Please do not drag disputes, complaints and other baggage from different discussion boards over to this one. What happens elsewhere in cyberspace is best left there - no one really needs to know, or cares, about your problems with the administrators/moderators/other users/etc. on any other forum.
I don't really want to know, or care what happens on AST. But we're about to get tons of it. Cross-posted crap and links to AST board discussion. I was against this when users were crossposting RPF and CultTVMan board stuff too back in the 00s. Still against it now.

Are you going to do the same for all members here on SSM or just those who've been posting on this thread?? Oh, and by the way I am calm.
No wonder you're thinking your considered the bad guy here, you're bringing it on yourself.
Have deleted my account as I asked?? A simple yes or no would suffice.

He just offered to create a forum similar to SSM over on AST if/when this goes dark at any time, so why are people going nuclear on him?

If you don't want to go onto AST, then don't, it is as simple as that. No obligations to do anything.

Jesus, what's worse than SSM going out with a whimper..? This, obviously.

Just let it go.

You've stated the case plainly and simply and we're rejected by the members, thinking that things will fix themselves and it will go back to the way it was.

When they log on and it says site not found that will be it.

- Spamming inboxes with unwanted invites to his forum.
- Attacking admins and the site owner.
- Posts about AST forum states

I was fine with him pimping for his site until that started. It is all unwanted content and not relevant discussion. And that's all he's contributed to this community over the years- pleas to join his forum.

And I'm not against or trying to prevent users from migrating to AST. Web boards everywhere are fading away. And I don't have the bandwidth or desire to join another one.

But I hate the noise, endless hyperbole and the permanent griping. Conditions are better now then they were four months ago. We can still post and argue/bicker/flame. You wouldn't think it from all of the AST posts here.

I agree on the second part, we don't know what's happening with John/Linda and others, and even with Kylwell posting we get nothing. That's a third rail that shouldn't be touched.

But seriously, a couple of months ago and we all thought the site was going to disappear at any moment, so I actually thank someone coming along and offering an alternative that is almost exactly the same thing. Still do because, being honest, nothing has been fixed here, other than an HTTP workaround that only we know about. Someone 'new' coming onto the site may well use the bad HTTP address and just assume, 'oh it's just a dead board.'

Sadly, SMM is still withering on the vine. All it would take us one more glitch and buh-bye Starship Modeler.

So as for his offer, I appreciate it and have taken him up on it, which doesn't mean I stop posting here obviously. As to spamming of inboxes, I haven't received one and kinda feel left out now. And I understand about the 'noise,' but you can choose not to open this thread and you can choose to block another user so you don't see their posts.

i intend to ''let it go'' as you suggested as i can say/do no more currently. that said, my offer stands.

my offer was rejected by some vocal members here, not by all of ssm. some joined when i first posted about the backup forum. others joined after i posted about the ssm member backup directory. more joined after i fixed the captcha and sent an invite.
