In general, do you leave ypur sci-fi models gloss-coated?

Being military "show-off" models, I was wondering if anyone leaves their sci-fi bombers, fighters, capital ships, etc. (X-Wings, Trek, tanks, vehicles, Gundams, etc) more gloss than flat since some sci-fi models aren't weathered as much in space.

I view sci-fi models as glossier than military models; however, sci-fi models are OFTEN military models anyway. So...

Generally speaking, I like to shoot it with semi-gloss when it's done. Gloss is unrealistic and flat is boring, IMHO.

Some are gloss, some are semi-gloss or satin, many are flat.

A few are combinations of the above.

Some are gloss becasue I haven't gotten around to matte coating them after applying a wash & decals.

Can't really answer in general, as each model has its own specific requirements. A new shiny space racer prolly otta be glossy, a Federation starship satin, and an X-wing flat.

Generally speaking I'll dull down the finish either a little or a lot depending on the model.

Gloss = toylike, in my opinion. You hardly ever see it done properly, and in scale.

But, I'm biased, since I build aerospace fighters almost exclusively. A gloss finish on the sci-fi equivalent of a Reno air racer would be fine.

I flat-coat all my sci fi models. To me it's just too unrealistic to gloss something so small.

Agreed. The only things I've ever left glossed are TIE panels.

Normally I use semigloss or flat, but right at the moment I'll use gloss for a current project: A Viper Mk II, in "museum condition", like in the beginning of the new Galactica series.
