Tamiya gloss paints and flat base - how much?

Post by Ziz »

Need to paint Spock's & McCoy's shirts - the AMT vinyl figures. I have a gloss Tamiya color that I need to mix with their "Flat Base". Is there a proportion to it - so much paint to so much flat - or is it just a "yes or no" thing...drop a random amount in there and you're good to go?

I just moved to Tamiya paints from humbrols, all i do is put a brush tip full into my color cup and it comes out a great matt finish.

I'll use the flat base to make a gloss paint more of a semi-gloss for better coverage. I haven't measured it or anything, but it doesn't take a whole lot.

So it's not 1:1 or 2:1 or any specific ratio - you just gotta improvise?

Pretty much ZIZ ive never seen anything about this so maybe somebody muct know more? All ive done is mix using a bit of common and it works great, if your airbrushing just put a brush tip full in the mix and shazam!

I'd start with 1:4 and work your way up from there...that's what's recommended for adding flat base to Future.

The thing is, I haven't really tried to make it dead flat, just semi-gloss to aid coverage. I think the Tamiya flats have way too much flattening agent in them anyway, generally I prefer the Gunze paints.

So, no I guess I'm not really helping ya, Ziz...

...just wing it. :?
