weathering chrome

Post by Kenny »

I have some chrome parts and I want to make them look very old and maybe chipped. I have read that bleach will strip chrome of plastic. Will a shorter length cause a beaten up look?

any other ideas?
That day, Vader was amazed to discover that when
fett was saying "As you wish", what he meant was, "I love you."
And even more amazing was the day he realized he truly loved him back.

I had an AMT Batmobile (the one from the first movie) and wanted the chrome to look dirty. Used a wash of flat black enamel and thinner. Brushed it on and waited a few minutes before giving it a light rub with a cloth. This left some raised edges shiny but mostly dirty. Turned out looking weathered and sooty; especially around the exhaust nozzle in back.

DEfinitely not. It will just make it crinkle and possbily chip.

I would suggest an india ink, water, and luandry detergent wash. Or, perhaps a pastel wash. Check out the washes thread for details. Over these, you could go with light airbrushed burnt iron, gunmetal, or flat aluminum metalized lacquers.

That was actually what I was thinking of causing in the first place, having a real hard time finding any pictures of old chrome and trying to remember what an old car's bumper (you call them fenders) i had looked like after one has been hit in the head as many times as I have is difficult

The oxidation is very "spotty." I would think it could be replicated via a very light, but coarse spray pattern of gunmetal, Krylon red primer, or burnt iron to keep it in scale.

Here's some pictures of weathered chrome:

It's not "crinkled" as much as it is "spotted" or "peppered."

I hope this helps.

Looks like an uneven coat of a clear flat may be in order, as well as the previous color recommendations.
