Decal Troubles

Post by Jerome »

I'm very close to finishing a model of the USS Voyager, but I have a problem. I cut apart some decals to start, then (one at a time)dipped them in water for 5 seconds, let them sit for 30 seconds, then attempted to slide them into place. They basically disintegrated. Am I doing something wrong? I followed the instructions to the letter, and I've never had this problem before.

they could've been to old - ergo, dry and susceptible to cracking.

Best bet is to ditch them and go with aftermarket decals.

Before you wet any more of them, spray them with a few coats of clearcoat. This is sometimes enough to get old decals to stay together.
I speak of the pompatous of plastic.

Like Future, or get Microscale's 127 liquid decal film. All three will act as a clear "glue" to hold the decal together long enough to slide off the paper and onto your model.

I highly recommend the liquid decal film. It's much better than the clearcoats, which tend to be brittle.

TER-OR, macfrank...

I have been checking out Micro Mark's catalog... now when you guys talk about "Microscale's 127 liquid decal film" I don't find a 127 Liquid decal film in the catalog... but on page 56 I do find a liquid Decal Film/Restoring Solution.

Is this what you guys are referring to?

Just about any decal film will do; Future works great and has other uses. It's probably not quite as flexible as one of the products below, but it works for me.

Microscale 127

This is the Badger item you mentioned. It probably works the same. Tower Hobbies has it for slightly less
