Hello all.

I'm about to start a repair job on a 1:6 scale vinyl figure that fell apart a while ago.

Part of the repair will be a complete strip and re-paint, since this was my first attempt at a large scale figure about eight years ago: the Phantom/Sol Rick Deckard. Picture (From the internets.)

I have mastered hair and skin painting at 28mm scale through 10 years of painting Games Workshop figures, but the few large scale figures I have done have been anime-style with large flat areas of hair.

Can anyone help me with a little advice on achieving a decent look with sculpted hair in 1:6 scale?

Please bear in mind that I do not have access to or the necessary skill to use an airbrush.

Your technique looks pretty good on the little figure. Probably very similar to what you would do with the larger scale.

I normally hand brush the hair on my figures. Usually, I pick a couple of base darker colors, and dip a fan brush into both of them. Then build up the paint in layers, one stroke at a time, painting with the direction of the hair, allowing the paint to mix in the brush and on the vinyl. Then use a highlight color to dry brush across any raised texture of the model and you're done.

As well as dry-brush highlights, washes in varius tones will also add depth to 'lowlights'.

VERY subtle with the dry brushing. Use shades which are just a little lighter than the one you've used as your base. Also, hair can tend to lighten toward its ends, so play with bangs etc.
