Falcon canopy/cockpit painting question

Post by Squall67584 »

So I'm building a cockpit that is similar to the Falcon's, with the cone shaped cockpit nose, but with no clear plastic for glass, just going to be open. I'm wanting to paint the interior of the cockpit, but not wanting any paint work inside to get oversprayed when painting the rest of the model. So is there some sort of masking technique you guys use so the canopy nose can be installed (and seams filled), but the interior be somehow masked? I've thought about lining the inside of the canopy nose with masking tape attached to the window framework, then attach it and paint, then try to remove the masking from there. Has anyone tried it that way?

My idea depends on how detailed the cockpit is. As long as you don't have something like dozens of photo-etch switches and knobs, it should be OK. Just loosely crumple some paper towel and pack the interior cavity with it. It will expand a little once it is inside the framework, and should sufficiently protect the interior paint. Once everything is painted and dry, just reach in with your handy modeling tweezers, and pull the wadded up paper towel back out through the framework.

Have Fun!
