LED lights for Bandai Voyager

Hi,
I want to replace the incandecent lights to LED's on my Bandai Voyager. My problem is that there is not much room if you leave in the interior clear plastic parts that are designed to diffuse the lights. My concern is with the engine area. Should I remove all the interior clear parts or maybe cut them back to accept the LED's. For example , in each engine nacelles there is a place for one incandecent but I want add 3 to 5 LED's.Two leds to light the warp engines at each end ,plus other LED's for navigation lights and impulse engines.
I have seen LEDs in Bandai kits bit there is never an explanation about how it was done. Any ideas?
