Advice needed on finishing first model

Post by rockhopper »

Hi Guys

I am in the process of finishing my first resin kit, a Warp Eagle.
I am pleased with my attempts for a first go, but need some advice on how to finish the model.
At the moment the model is completely white (tamiya flat white), apart from the windows and crosses on the side pods which i will paint flat black.
The instructions also suggest painting random squares and rectangles of light grey, which i will probably do, but i have a feeling the model will still look too new!
How should i go about weathering the kit to give that used industrial look, rather than the clinical look i have at the moment?
I also have a set of jbot decals, am i right in thinking that i apply these before weathering?

Many Thanks

First, don't use white. Gray it down a bit. White is just too white. You can do some shading effects by starting with a darker (but still light) off-white gray. Then paint lighter sections and faded areas as needed. You can do a lot with the airbrush.

Do you have an airbrush?

Pastel powders (chalk pastels ground to a fine powder) are great for weathering too. The moon is mostly gray, so accumulations of gray dust in recessed areas is probably a good technique.

Yeah, put the decals down after airbrush effects, and make sure you seal the paint with a clear coat first. Then apply decals, and clear-coat the decals to seal them. Then do your washes. Then dullcoat the model and go to town.
