Chopper II or Chopper III?...

Got a question about techniques, materials or other aspects of physically building a model? This is the place to ask.

Chopper II or Chopper III?...

Post by Lt. Z0mBe »

Wise and Sagely Scale Modelers,

I have a dilemna. I made an offering to the gods at my workbench. They have smiled upon me with a choice: The Chopper II or the Chopper III.

The Chopper III is an upsized version of the original Chopper. It's 18 inches long, has precision guides, and can handle up to three handles at once.

But, the Chopper II is smaller, heavier duty, and has a much thicker handle. It's the same principle as the Chopper, but with cast aluminum components.

I've got a big workbench. The Chopper II is heavier duty, but smaller and more expensive. The Chopper III is larger, less expensive, but I am not sure if the differences in construction will be of any consequence.

I bring my observations before the council of resin and styrene. What are your experiences?

I appreciate the help.

Kenny

Get the Chopper II. The masonite that the first one and the bigger Chopper III is made of allows for the screws to eventually wear the holes out and it all becomes loose. It's a decent enough tool, but the Chopper II is much much nicer, and a whole bunch more solid.

I hadn't considered the masonite angle. That's why I ask you all. Erin, your wise counsel is always appreciated in the areas of Aves, tools, anime and fine adult beverages. :)

Well thank ya! But seriously, I've had the first one and now the second and they don't even compare. I gave the first one to Pat, and he fixed it and it still works, but if you get the second one you won't have to fix it!

Enjoy, it really is a great tool!

I would have to agree with everyone here.....The Chopper II is the way to go. I bought mine from a LHS that was going out of bussiness :( so I got it very cheap. I absolutely love it, it's one of those tools that you ask yourself how did I get along without this thing. So in short

How do you know my dimwitted inexperience isn't really a subtle form of manipulation used to lower peoples expectations, thereby enhancing my ability to maneuver myself within any given situation?

Choppa deuce.
And get a spare green pad while you're at it.

Bear in mind very thick styrene - more than 3-4mm will not chop neatly, the razor will bend a bit. Just a heads-up.
