Wash stain with oils on acrylic

Post by PetarB »

I did my first oil wash on a clear gloss acrylic.

Prior to this I tended to use pastel washes and other acrylic washes, with varying results. I still quite like pastel washes, they just have their limitations.

I was quite surprised how the oil brought out very fine panel lines and I quite impressed. The capillary action was very good. I think for fine panel work, I have not seen a technique work as good as this.

The problem with one item I did with the oil wash (tube oil paint + odorless varsol) was that on one subject, it lightly 'stained' the acrylic gloss underneath, and no amount of cotton swabbing with more varsol is removing it. I have a feeling that I did not let the acrylic gloss coat dry enough... I put the oil wash over it about 4 hours after the gloss coat went on. Would that be the only issue?

Note that the acrylic gloss I used was from a spraybomb. Is Future better for this sort of wash than an acrylic gloss?

Ah, went for the quick dry method.

Try a bit of odorless turpenoid.

Future would probably be better for a short timeline, I think.

Oils are nice, as are watercolors - particularly the transparent ones.

I'm impatient, so I use naptha thinned oils over future for my washes. Naptha dries in minutes, leaving a nice layer of oils. It tends to weaken and even crack bare plastic, though, so a good coverage with future is essential. I put down at least 4 layers of future before washing; I've screwed up too many finishes not doing so!

Sounds like you went too fast. I feel yer pain. I like to paint fast and furious, too! Just have to force yourself to slow down. I've been doing it lately and it's really paying off.

That's why I really like the watercolors, you can remove excess as soon as the water carrier evaporates. And if it's not good, a damp swab removes it and you can do it over. Takes way less time. While oils are a little more durable, I usually seal them as well anyway.

Oils are a bit more subtle, though, and have their own uses beyond just washes.

Next questions guys, sorry I don't use oils so Im asking some probably obvious questions. Can I put a clear acrylic back over my oil wash. Note the oil wash was done over an acrylic clear. I've let it dry for a few days now...
