How to model lunar surface

Post by mclank »

I'm building a model on a moon surface that I am planning on hanging on the wall. What would be some good materials/techniques to use for making a solid and realistic lunar landscape?

I'd build up a base of play sand/white glue mixture, mold it to shape, and let it dry. (this turns rock hard) Then brush on a thinned mixture of white glue and water, and sift on a light coating of corn starch. Shake off the excess, and allow this to dry completely. Once dry, you can airbrush it with your choice of moon colors and you should be set to go.

Have Fun!

I tried a technique that I read about on the making of Wolf (I think).

They made a hemisphere and covered it with plater and then dropped different sized balls onto it and that created realistic moon craters.

Worked o.k. for me, but that was ages ago. I used it in a stop-motion moon shuttle on a runway scene for a school project and I didn't take any pictures of it. Not one of my brightest moments.

Jon Leslie, the paper model guy, has a nice recipe for modeling a lunar surface -
