I read in another thread that a blinking LED will have a shorter life than if you use a simple computer to control the flash rate. My question is, what if I wire a blinking LED to be the first in the series--will this shorten the life span of all the LEDs in the series? And if so, by how much?
Thing is, blinking LED only costs $2.50, compared to a single chip computer running me $25. But if my LEDs burn out prematurely, I'd rather pay the $25 than having to dig the model open to replace dead LEDs.
Other thing was that when I run the LEDs in series with the flashing LED first, I noticed that the other LEDs in the series are very slightly illuminated all the time with full brightness on the blink, as opposed to being all the way off and then all the way on. I found this to be a rather attractive effect.

Re: Blinking LED lifespan question
Well I do not know about the blinkin LED itself, but LEDs which are put in series with it have, as I was told from my local electronics specialist, indeed a longer lifespan than those who shine continously. As he said to me the time it is off is actually a regeneration and the new start does not harm it as it is the case in normal bulbs.No_6 wrote:I read in another thread that a blinking LED will have a shorter life than if you use a simple computer to control the flash rate.
