Stobe circuits for AMT Enterprise E

Post by Often wrong Soong »

Hi guys, I need a bit of help with a strobe circuit for my Ent E.
Is there a way of having 2 sets of strobes flashing at different rates on the same circuit, and have the rates adjustable? I want to avoid pic's and LM3909's if possible.
If not, what IC is a good/better alternative to the LM3909?

Cheers meisters!

you can use a 555 chip ,one circuit for each strobe rate. I dont know where I found the planes for them but there easy to build. I will try to find the planes.

You could use a 556 chip - two separate 555's in one little plastic bug. Or the CMOS equivalent to save much power.

Yeah, thought about that but im not too good with this stuff and wasnt sure how to get the strobe flash 'abrupt' enough with a 555/6.
Is it just a case of getting the right capacitors and resistors?

That's exactly it Wrong - with one small addition

Check THIS for the schematic and THIS for the vid of the result

Vary R5 and R4 to get the timing - but keep R4's value well below R5's

Leave the Diode in, that's how you get the quick on-off of a strobe effect from a 555

Over 500 FFB kits sold Ken...
Don't get snippy...It is still a simple, reliable and popular chip back in the 20th Century.

this works for strobes (not my design)

you can adust the pulse time with the 50k pot then replace it with a matching fixed resistor when its running the way you want it.

Sorry if I sounded snippy, Don, wasn't my intent

More of a little poke to the ribs ;)

I know it's a good chip, I used it back in the 80's for various things, point is, it's a dying breed - those of us that don't have access to them anymore have to do things a little differently

I've still got a LM3909 in my stash but since I needed 2 seperate strobe rates I thought I'd try to use some parts I already have rather than track down more LM3909's online. This is the schematic I settled on, I used a 50k Pot for R2 so I can adjust the rate

I built up 2 identical circuits and they work like a charm :D

"This thread is useless without video" ;)

I don't see a thing wrong with the Schematic - and you said it works like a charm

Good going there, Wrong!

We'll teach you electronics yet
