When I used to use my craft paints, I would always throw down some black before the silver then go over it with the silver.
Should I do the same with the MM or will I be waisting alot of black?
Will the silver be enough and not need the undercoat?

Undercoats can make a big difference. Gloss black should give more more of a reflectance. You can try other colors under panels like red, yellow, etc to give a more vibrant color. Same with yellow under gold and red under copper...
