Very soft resin parts

Post by Dukat, S.G. »

All,

I have a handful of small (1cm long or less) resin parts that have so much "give" to them, I can't even gently shave off a bit of flash with a brand-new #11 blade. When I try, the whole part simply bends like a tiny piece of rubber.

Some of these parts can be replaced with styrene rod, tube and sheet, but others ... I'm not so sure. We're looking at a LOT of very fine details.
I could pilfer similar parts from other kits if I have to, but that's my last option.

Superglue reinforcement's not an option because it would totally obscure those details, but my dad had an interesting idea. While he's no modeler, he suggested I try applying clear fingernail polish to give these parts some integrity.

Input's appreciated.

It's possible that these parts were meant to be like this to prevent breakage. They're from a kit you bought, right? Have you contacted the manufacturer to ask about replacements or if they are supposed to be this soft?

You could try post curing in a low temp oven for half an hour....let cool to room temp and check again.

Obviously, try this with an easy to replace part first.

I typically get parts like that when I forget to shake the "B" part of the
two part resin before portioning.

Most likely they will never be completely "firm".

Umi, I agree...same cause for me as well...post curing was just an idea that I thought might work.
