Perfect!
Hi Zysurge, Yes indeed, that is just what I wanted to confirm. Technically, I think my load, the model, goes on the two middle terminals and the battery and wall wart go on the ends, with the +'s on one side of the switch and -'s on the other. Thanks for the quick response and the image as well! Che...

DPDT switching- two power supplies
Hi all, I am working on a project and I want to use a DPDT switch and connect it up for two different power supplies. I want to be able to switch between "off," Battery power, and wall wart (from AC) power. The model is wired and I'm ready to connect the lights and power supplies. The stan...

MF,
Thanks for the additional information. I have heard about tinning but I knew just enough to cause trouble. All is clear now, so thank you again for the instruction.
Cheers, Jim

Hi MF, Thanks for the input. Just so I am clear, your recommendation is to apply some solder to the LED and resistor leads before cutting them shorter, join them together mechanically, then re-heat the joint area to solder them together. And the same would apply to solder the resistor and LED Lead t...

Soldering lighting parts
Hi all, I've had the basic LED's and resistors for a project in hand for a while. I'm new to lighting, and it's time to solder the bits up and install them. Both the LED's and the resistors have long straight wires on them, so the question is, can I safely shorten them, by up to half? I'm thinking o...

Soldering question- wires
Hi all, I am running wire in my Y-wing project and a friend of mine has offered to solder the connections. I had him do a couple of connections for the main power, hooking up half of the power plug set. He ran the wires through the mounts, twisted the wire together, applied heat and ran the solder i...

Hi! Well, over the last couple of weeks, I have continued to learn and I have purchased a regulated 6 volt power supply; the output will match the 6 volts available from four AA batteries. The batteries and the hook-up for the power supply will all be contained in the base; I have a three-position s...

Tchail and Paul, Are we perhaps speaking past one another here? I looked at your link and I understand it perfectly- one terminal is + and the other is -; no problems. I do not have such a diagram on this jack's package- only the drawing of the jack from the back, showing the three terminals. The th...

Thanks, plus a follow-up question
Gentlemen, Thank for your quick replies. I stopped by the closest Radio Shack where they told me they didn't have anything like that. But I didn't take No for the answer and went looking in their bins. I found a panel mount coaxial power jack, size M, which fits my wall wart. Success! To follow up, ...

How to find a receptacle for a wall wart's plug?
Hi all, Regarding my current project and the lighting, I have done the background research including questions on other threads in this sub-forum. I have bought a selection of LED's and resistors, obtained tools, wiring, a battery holder, a wall wart, and a switch for having both battery and wall po...

Chiver, I too am new to modeling with lights and I am in the middle of a project. I wound up buying the individual bits- LED's, wiring, resistors, power supply, etc. to fit my needs, rather than buying a lighting kit. I also did not buy in bulk, although there are economies to be had if you plan on ...

I would be interested to know more about the film, maybe down the line? T...

Hi Star, Thanks for the additional information. It would seem, then, that this is a good power adapter for my hobby purposes, correct? So far my experience is two-fold; one part is learning enough basics to make things work, and the second is figuring out where to find the things you actually need. ...

Is this a good power adapter?
Hi all, As a newbie learning the lighting ropes, I have had a hard time finding a good power adapter for my Y-wing project. Based on the great assistance I have received here, I am looking for an ac to dc power adapter, 6 volt, .5 -1 Amp, and it must be regulated. I found several at decent prices th...

Can I trim and bend the leads on LED lights?
Hi all, In thinking through all of the design issues around lighting up my y-wing, linear space for an LED plus it's resistor may become an issue, mainly in the cockpit area which will be making use of fiber optics. I have also noticed that the leads coming out of LED lights seems to be quite long. ...

Hi en't, This is not really aimed at the original poster, but your comments raise a question for me. I need some general light for the instrument panel and some FO for indicators around the cockpit; can I do both using the same LED? If so, how? And since I'm asking, pictures would be extremely helpf...

No worries, sir!
Hi Ziz,
Not to worry, I didn't round off when doing the calculations; I just wrote that because I do not think one would go looking for/find a 3.6 volt power source!
Thanks again, Jim

Hi Ziz, Well, this is easier if one already knows what to do first. I am not trying to arbitrarily pick a voltage, but I have been guessing based on what I have read; as I study more, my sense of the right amount of power has dropped. I thought I needed 12 volts at one time because I was adding up t...

Hi Ant, The reason I had settled on 9V is because I am a total noob, which is illustrated by the several general and specific questions I have been posting lately. I will be using two bright white LED's for the engines rated at around 3.2V, and two smaller white LED's (less bright, but still likely ...

Hi Joseph, Thanks for the "point" to the battery holder, but especially for the note about rechargeable batteries! I'd never have guessed that. So, what happens if I use 9 volts to figure out the required resistors for my LED's, and then give them 7.2 volts instead of 9? Do they simply get...

Will an 8-hole AA battery pack work with only six batteries?
Hi all, So I think I have settled on using a 9 volt battery pack as well as a 9 volt regulated DC wall wort for the alternative power sources for my lighted Y-wing project. I want to use rechargeable AA batteries rather than the rectangular 9 volt battery, since I believe the AA batteries will give ...

Main power in parallel, I believe...
Hi Scott, Well, a bit of both, based on diagrams I've seen. The resistors and the LED's need to go in series, and the sets of LED's/resistors then get wired in parallel. Is that correct? And based on further research, if that is correct, then to size the resistors I would take the total voltage avai...
