Gong to add my Mustard.
1.) Sandwich foam board between 2 thin layers of plastic sheeting/balsa pieces, you can still add ribs by dividing the foam board.
Might not be the cheapest, but I think it is a very flexible solution. Of course depends on your budget, etc.

Re: Safe acrylic paints for Bandai models?
GSI/Creo aka Gunze/Mr Hobby as the kit Instructions refer to them.
Easy rule Tamiya kit = Tamiya paints.
Other Japanese kits usually give colours in Gunze & MR Hobby ranges?
Of course there are other ranges available in Japan: Gaianotes, Citadel, Vallejo, etc

Wireless LED & Base.
Hi. Not sure if this has been mentioned. There is now a display base available that can power wireless LED. Saw an example today and grabbed a Flier. LED are 4.5mm * 4.5mm and come in sets of 10(Corlours: White, Red, Blue, Green, Amber, Pink. Purple). Base powers a 'Cube' 30cm*30cm*30cm Still pricey...

Re: Corrugated conduit to hide wires
Another option is using mesh pipes as are used on car and motorbike models for hydraulic lines. Of course wires need to be thin to fit inside.

Re: How to weather question
Weathering is tough to get right.
I see many people that over-weather their kits, exagerated panel lines, etc.
Most common techniques are washes and dry-brushing, both should be applied sparingly and build up in layers.

Re: Drilling Really Tiny Holes?
I got a wave pen style router, small, light and smooth speed dial.
This one: https://hlj.com/product/WAVHT-190
But prefer a pinvise as I go down to 0.1mm bits (look at it wrong and it breaks).
Great advise above. go slowly, few holes at a time.

Use a pinvise with lots of small drill-bits(snap easily).

Start with sketches from various views, angles.
For layout, placements again use figures, etc on a piece of paper to mark.
Rest depends.

Re: Tamiya acrylics and using a gloss coat
Tamiya makes matte, semigloss and gloss topcoats when in doubt.
General rule avoid hot coats( top, paint) over less volatile ones and always give a few days to let current coat/ paint dry 100%.
