When I used to do a lot of computer prototyping work (I/O cards, A/D, controller boards, etc.) I discovered a simple rule - the more expensive and esoteric the part, the easier it was to get a sample or two (within reason, of course). Getting a CCD sample ($100+, each at the time) - no problem. "Just one? How about two?" Getting a sample of a 6522 (a handy parallel port chip) No. Had to buy one.
