Millenium Falcon weathering technique, how to guide

Post by TonyT »

Hi Guys,

People asked in my thread in work in progress for the Falcons final resting place, how I painted my weathering, so I have done a little step by step guide.

It was really easy, I use Vallejo paints BTW to do it.

Ok

Step one, primed with a grey car acrylic primer ( Halfords in UK) then a matt white aerosol over that.

Step two was to add the paint scheme where it was to go, note its not really neatly painted as I will lose a lot of it

http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/ff32 ... ling/b.jpg

Step three On to this I simply ran some black not to tidly with a bit of water to add some tone to the lines / seams and over some of the panels.
I then sealed it with Humbrol Matt Aerosol varnish

Step four I then started to add some of the rusty colour around areas I wanted it, running it around areas such as panel edges and seems as these are where it starts to rust, again another coat of matt varnish as applied to seal it and prevent the next layers bleeding into it.

http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/ff32 ... ling/d.jpg

Step five additional rust colour was added over the top, also black was added for depth, these were done as both washed or dabs of solid colours, paying attention to where rust would form, dabbing with a cloth removes excess and gives a softer finish, stippling the brush gives little rust spotsto the surface. just play with it, adding water to the brush you can steer the paint to where you want it to pool with the brush, again after this I resealed it with Matt Varnish.

Step six as I wanted to give a mossy algea build up I now added a wash of green over the top, taking some neat green on the brush I added it to areas then wetting the brush steered it to where I wanted it, heavier on the edges and in the panel joins. I then sealed it again with matt varnish.

Step seven was to try to blend it tonally a bit so I used black as a wash and to pick out some details by working it into panels and crevices, again after this I sealed it with Matt Varnish. the odd dark patch is where it has not dried yet.

http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/ff32 ... ling/g.jpg

Step eight because the toning and blending reduces some of the colours I then used the rust tone to increase the rust colour wise, adding it to panel lines around seams and also stippling on some panels to lift the colour.

http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/ff32 ... ling/h.jpg

Step nine Finally I take a some darkish cream colour as a wash to take the edge off the rust and also to lift the whites and blend it all together...... oh and then the good old Humbrol Varnish.... :)

Remember this is an abandoned ship I am doing so I have gone for the unused derelict state where nature is taking it back over, also one panel isn't painted as the gun mounts cover it when added.....

Hope it is of some help for someone and it shows how easy it is, I like doing it this way, but I realise it's just my way and others will either like it or loath it....

Oh cool, I thought that thread was just another Falcon build so I'd been skipping over it, but with this I had to check it out. Pretty awesome!

Working on it at the moment, I was thinking more of a sandy scene if I do a base...... not done one before.
