Finishing X-Wing - Red Stripe on the side ???

Post by Duker »

Hello everyone,

I'm getting back into this after, well let's just say many years, but I've always loved it and appreciated people's art.

I'm doing an X-Wing (Fine Molds, 1:72) and I've been researching that stripe along the side of the ship.

I'm doing Red 5 from "A New Hope" and when Luke is getting into his ship (climbing the ladder on the left hand side) it's a SOLID RED STRIPE; however, when he's attacking the Death Star, it's not a SOLID stripe anymore on the left hand side, but rather there's a white divider between them towards the nose of the ship.

Can anyone please tell me what the consensus is on this topic.

Thanks very much, I appreciate any feedback. It's great to be back.

(I also posted this in the Star Wars portion of the forums, but was unsure whether it should be in this one as it pertains to finishing - sorry for the double post.)

Ah...welcome to the world of visual effects continuity inconsistency. Star Wars was particularly affected by this issue.

The special edition...with their digital X-Wings in the first Death Star battle...are ALL Red 2. Talk about laziness...

Anyway...to answer your question...the usual consensus is that Luke's Red 5 has the segmented red stripe markings. That is how the studio miniature was painted.

The live action set pieces were just generically painted with a solid stripe and little to no weathering. You have to realize they were on such a tight schedule and budget at the time.

It's your model though...paint it however you like!
