Need cockpit ideas...

I am currently scratchbuilding a craft of my own design - something I've been drawing on and off since I was a kid - and am now looking for something to use as the basis for the cockpit module bit.

It's a twin-seat side-by-side bullet-nosed design - I've always sketched it as something about the same shape and size as a Space 1999 Eagle - or more accurately, Hawk - nosecone, though with a more conventional canopy.

Any ideas on what I might be able to use?

Without seeing a picture of what you're describing, it's kind of hard to give ideas. The cockpit tub from an A-6E, EA-6B or F-111 kit comes to mind. Of course your working scale would dictate kit availability for those. I know you can find donor kits for any of those planes in 1/48 or 1/72.

All good ideas guys. I did think the Hunter 2-seater would work but the 1/72 kit is a little small for the ship (even though it is a 1/72 model), and they don't make it in 1/48. F111s and Flankers are a bit pointy for what I have in mind, but the 2 seat lightning could be perfect if I can find one, or even the A6....

A cockpit is just a couple of boxes and a couple of seats, so just stick some random parts together.

The A37 is another possibility, though it's not *quite* pointy enough to be ideal. I like the TF102 - never knew it existed! But can I find a kit of it? I thought the 2-seat Lightning would be ideal, and it turns out there was once an injection 2-seat conversion kit for the front in 1/48 which would have been perfect - but the makers mold broke and now they cost squillions.... arrg!

Hi Paul,

Actually, Aeroclub of England made a Hawker Hunter T2 trainer conversion set in 1/48 scale at one time. I would check out britmodeller in particular and see if you can find one secondhand if you think the shape would suit you.

Hi Paul,

Here is another thought, although it's likely you have already thought of/done this. On sites like HyperScale and Britmodeller, they have wants/needs lists of items both for sale and for trade. I have had pretty good luck looking for things there, not just in finding what I wanted but also with pricing. If someone has what you have asked for in their stash of "never going to get to that" items, they may well let it go for a very reasonable price. This may be worth a shot if you have not tried already.

I've tried Britmodeller - no one is willing to part with one!

And no one makes a 1/48 KA 52 (thought of that too!)

And I'm aftraid buying a 1/48 Flanker just to butcher the cockpit is too extravagant even for me!

Projects on hold anyway til I've done my Stafighter competition entry!!

Okay, the nose might be too "pointy" for your usage, but perhaps the cockpit "tub" could be used? Come to think of it... if you're just looking for a "cockpit tub" then why even worry about "pointy-looking" forward fuselage anyway?
And of course with regards to "cockpit tub" -- how do you envision how the pilots board? Do they climb in through an opened cockpit canopy (e.g. something like fighter plane), or climb into hatch into the cabin (something like you'd expect on a bomber)?
