Tamiya XF-12 J.N. Grey vs. Tamiya AS-29 Gray-Green IJN

Are Tamiya XF-12 J.N. Grey(acrylic) and Tamiya AS-29 Gray-Green IJN(spray can) basically the same color?

According to Tamiya, XF-76 Gray-Green (IJN) is the same as AS-29 Gray-Green (IJN).

Is XF-76/AS-29 Gray Green(IJN) similar to XF-12 JN Gray? I'm thinking one is lighter then the other.

XF-12 is greener and a touch darker.

AS-29/XF-76 Gray Green being lighter then XF-12 JN Grey is a good thing since it's a bit too dark compared to the WalMart "Concrete" color sample. XF-12 JN Grey is also a bit too green.

Is AS-29/XF-76 Gray Green a lot less green or just a bit less so then XF-12 JN Grey?

What's your application? Is this a TOS Enterprise? Probably not and none of my business, but FWIW, Paul Newitt's book describes one paint combination as Tamiya XF-11 JN Green as one choice I found it totally...not right. However, JN Gray 4:1 with white comes out nice to my eye.

How useless was that?

This is for a TOS Enterprise. That may have been a mistake in the book with the XF-11 JN Green. In the article Paul Newitt wrote regarding the TOS Enterprise's color on CultTVMan's site he recommends XF-12 JN Grey with some white added.

I tested XF-12 JN Grey with some white and it looks great. However I'm not a big fan of the Tamiya acrylic paints. I like the durability of Testor's Acryl but unfortunately Testor's Acryl doesn't have a color to match.

I have to get some time to get to my local hobby shop to check out the synthetic lacquer spray Tamiya AS-29 Gray Green. This color might be right on without having to add any white. If it's the right color I'll use my airbrush to spray it on. If not I'll just use the Tamiya XF-12 with some white added and overcoat with Testor's Acryl flat clear.

We all have our favorites. The PL E was my first real use with Tamiya. I used it with Tamiya thinner and it went down beautifully. Of course, Newitt's book has several other mixes to match the same "concrete" shade. His model master mix is 1 part sac bomber green, 6 parts flat gull gray, 23-25 parts insignia white. The last mix of that I tried was more like 2-9-20.

The Testors Model Master mix Paul recommended is the enamel paints. There is no Sac Bomber green in the Acryl paints. I want to use either acrylic or synthetic lacquer.

If I do use the Tamiya JN Gray I'll just go over it with Acryl clear. I tested this on a small part and it works.

There's the Pollyscale mix for concrete: it says IJA light gray 505274 or pale blue gray 505326

Have you tried out the Pollyscale mix?

Did you paint a TOS Enterprise with the Tamiya XF-12 JN Gray mix? Any pictures?

Not tried Pollyscale since it was PollyS but liked it at that time. I have the whole Franz Josef series in some stage of completion in the 4:1 JN Gray/White mix. No pics, but I'd be glad to take one in natural light tomorrow and email you if you want to send me your email. Honestly, it won't tell you anything. As I've read for years, that color tends to take on the tone of whatever light is hitting it.
