Dot filter?

Not sure I've got the name right. Its where you use many mulch-coloured dots and then streak them to simulate mild discoloration due to Rain etc. Anyone heard of this? Got any links to how to articles?

Heard of it, and used it with some success. I've done it with water-color pencils, and then brushed with water.
Makes nice rust and water stains on ship models

Do a Google search for "dot filter technique" or "dot filter weathering" and you will get many hits from various modeling circles. I've used it with oil paints and it works very well.

The 2 tricks are using good & fine oils and tiny tiny dots.

Mike Fichtenmeyer (FichtenFoo) has some excellent how-to article videos on youtube showing how to do this with oils over acrylic sealers like Future.

Anyone ever use enamels for the filter over acrylics?
What's the advantage of oils here?

The translucency and very slow drying time of oils make them ideal for this technique. If your base paint is enamel, it is very important to seal it against the mineral spirits or turpentine that you use for the dot filtering; Future usually does the job.
