Where Can I Buy Lamp Oil Locally?

Got a question about techniques, materials or other aspects of physically building a model? This is the place to ask.

Where Can I Buy Lamp Oil Locally?

Post by Wug »

Where can I buy lamp oil locally? I use it to remove stickers from plastic. It is far more effective and was less expensive than Goo Gone. Hardware stores and Walmart sold it at affordable prices. Now I can only find it at Michaels in small bottles at high prices. Amazon sells it but I'd prefer buying it locally and saving the shipping.

Thanks

Maybe a good sporting goods store.

If you have a Cabela's near you they should have it.

See if you can find a local hardware chain, or an "olde fashioned" one like Ace hardware.

The big box stores tend to not carry older stuff, but since the smaller stores don't need to pinch every tenth of a cent, they can carry stuff the big boxes don't. for example, if I need to get some pure sodium hydroxide for class, i go to Ace and get the Red Devil drain cleaner. Lowe's and Home Depot only carry the mixed, safer stuff.

Another good thing about the older type stores - they're full of older guys who actually know what they're talking about. Never been steered wrong at one yet.

Are you near any Amish? They usually have stores that are mostly by and for their community, but they are more than happy to sell stuff to you. Lamp oil may be in a 5 gallon bucket. A really good lighting store might have some too.

My wife bought some not too long ago at Walmart. We had nearly run out thanks to Hurricane Sandy.
But isn't it all Klingon opera?

We used WD-40 to remove stickers.

It's fast and removes most all paper stickers and the glue from them.

If you're careful, you don't even need solvent. Depending on how thick the plastic is, you can warm up the sticker with a hair dryer. The heat softens the glue just enough to be able to slowly peel the sticker off.
