AMT ProShop X-Wing

Post by BALTA1 »

Hi all, I just wanted to see if anyone here has ever replace the standard bulbs that come with the ProShop X-Wing with LED's.
Was it easy to do?
Is there a specific LED that needs to be used?
I'm not looking to replace the board just the lights. This is my first lighting project so any help anyone can give would much appreciated.
TIA

I don't know. Always wondered if any Pro shop models ever got built by actual pro modelers. I've seen some pro built kits sold on eBay over the years but I don't remember if any of them were from the pro-shop series of kits.

I built one years ago and enjoyed it a lot. When I was removing the canopy from the sprue I managed to get a giant crack in it - called ERTL to ask about a replacement part and they sent me an entire replacement kit so I know why they went out of business LOL

The mechanics were pretty decent, I liked the cockpit...I know it's kind of blocky but the parts fit was good for that vintage of kit.

I was presented with a Pro-Shop X-Wing a year ago to repair on its electronics but the Client had a change of mind due to my overworked schedule.

Since I had not seen the bulbs personally, I just hope the following observations might help you:

1. Bulbs have a 270° spread of light compared to a LED's narrow viewing angle which is about 90°. But for the case of the X-Wing, it might not matter, it just runs cooler.

2. You might need to have a current limiting resistor for the LED. This is because although the circuit might be designed for the bulbs, it might burn the LED of you did direct swap.

The kits rice bulbs were switched out for LED's. The servo operating the canopy was a very ingenious idea added on by millennium falsehood.
There actually are plenty of these kits completed that are out there. Like most builds once the build threads are gone they are purged ( speaking in reference to this forum) It is an inaccurate kit but can be modified and improved on to become an excellent representation of an x wing. And in 35 scale its just inches away from SS.

When I built it, I was able to drop in some LEDs with no need for resistors whatsoever. The board only supplies as much energy as your light sources need, so you're also able to add in more LEDs if you want to light up the control panels on the left and right side of the pilot and R2-D2.
