Hey guys. I've done some scratch builds before. But when it came to painting I've just gone for a single color, or just went really simple. I have a ship that I'm working on for a local star ship club captain. It's a modified excelsior, known as the Alaska class.

Now o know I can get after market decals for the disk and nacelles from an excelsior. And the deflector dish ones from an enterprise one. But what do I do for the sections that I have to create? How do I get ones that will cover them nicely? I can use some of the left over a from the two other kits. But that will only get me so far. How do I make panels for the areas that don't couture to any of the left overs? Or are supposed bro be a different color? Does some one out there just make a generic
Aztec decal sheet that is nothing but one large panel with maybe some in different shades? Or do you just buy a bunch of different ones and just make them work? Help me out guys. I really want to get this to pop for him. He's never seen his ship except in the images above. So I'm hoping to bring it to life for him.

I bumped this one over to Finishing because you are more likely to find a useful response here...
If you are bashing an Excelsior kit into this ship variant, finish up the build, and then use pieces of aluminum foil to copy the hull shapes that are non-standard. Then use those as templates for the pattern that you want.
I'm sure there are easier ways, but that would be my approach.

Here's what I'm trying to do. I'm attempting to build an Alaska class ship for a local starship club.

It has elements of the excelsior and the ent A. The dish and nacelles of the excelsior and the deflector and shuttle bay of the ent A. I can buy decal sets for both. But the neck and the rest of the engineering hull is all scratch. And I know I can cut some of the shapes out of what is left over from both of this sheets. Less of the excelsior because of all the blue pommels. But I doubt that there will be enough to cover all that real estate. Or have the panels going at the right angles to compliment the hull contures. What I was wondering was is there some one that makes just a generic sheet that has 1000 scale panels? Or do I just throw down money on another set of decals that I'll only use part of?
