Scotian Shipyards

I found this design on the inter-webs, on a Traveler-ship design site. I won't use this exact design, but I do want to use facets of it as departure points.

These are some of my raw materials. More will be obtained, in the fullness of time and as required. :)

Ok - I've been feeling like a slug for not getting busy on my "own" challenge. Since I have this week off from work - plant shut-down - I really have no more excuses. :) Besides, despite all the evidence to the contrary, I really do want to do this. Also, this is my first try at using Imgur instead of Photobucket, so please be patient - I'm a long way from being comfortable with the new site and how it does things. :)

Ladies and Laddies, I give you the initial images from the imaginatively-named (hah!) "Build A".

First DeckingAttempt I used the thickest sheet styrene I have, in the hopes of not having to add supports under the decking. Not so - it sags. :( To make matters worse, that was the last of the thick stuff ... Rats!

Second Deck Attempt As you can see, I don't have quite enough of my next-thickest plastic either, and my super-glue is lacking. John, I don't suppose you got in any more of that black CA? I could really use some.

That pesky plate-ring I'm now at the point of trying to figure out how to not have to remove that ring, but I don't think I have enough putty! I declare, the Army should use whatever that's made of to cover their tanks - it's impervious! :)

You are in need of a belt sander to get that ring off.

My first thought of the ship design is that the front half reminded me of the USS Defiant from DS9.

Good luck.

A-a-a-and just like that, Build A is on hiatus.

I have somehow managed to break both plates, so I'm out of both building material and glue.

Those plates are made out of malamine and can be brittle if too much pressure is applied.

As I found out. :) It's all good - learning experience, and all that. The Dollar Store has plenty more of them, I'm sure. :) I just need to make a re-supply run.

Re-start.

New plates - platters, really. This changes the design a wee bit - oval instead of round, and a new idea for the forward hull.

Internal bracing added, as well as locator "buck teeth" on the forward hull.

Why try and get rid of it? Keep it and use another smaller plate as a second hull level or use a piece of styrene and create a weapons platform. Just shooting out a couple of ideas.

That's why I looked until I found plates made of what appeared to be styrene. I sanded off the ring on the bottom plate and used the ring on the top to help blend in a secondary dome.

More propulsion stuff and working on the main hull.

I'm using broken CD jewel cases for the hull plating - they readily take model glue, and once glued together they're pretty rigid.

My company gave us all a snow day, courtesy of Winter Storm Stella - which, where I live, turned out to be mostly rain. :) Never let it said that I looked a gift horse in the mouth - I've had a busy and relaxing day working on the Phaeton and listening to Sweet's Best Hits. :)

I mostly just fine-tuned the design of the Phaeton's shuttle-craft, which are the first of a new class of such craft - the Fae.

I just realized  that the Fae craft are in fact my second plate build, so they now have their own Imgur file. That, of course, re-starts the picture number-sequence ...
