My first thought would be to adjust the brightness of the copper with a little brown.

I got a good weathered copper by using Testers spray copper and then giving it a glaze coat of water-based wood stain in a brown color:

I used Tamiya smoke over copper on my 1/1000 TOS E. Looks pretty good.

Did you dilute the paint at all?
