Also there could have been limitations of sfx to show a targeting grid on a tiny hand held display.
They really struggled to show a larger tricorder screen

Not many people know that when the phaser originally conceived Roddenberry proposed a pop up targeting display that was the grid. If you look closely at the episode, The Man Trap, you can see this when they fire their phasers.

I guess the idea was dropped due to the props breaking during use.
The hero Phaser I props still kept the pop-up sight for most of the series...

... that work pretty much like Jefferies' designed them...

But yeah, it would have been nice to have had the sight there for the Phaser II like in the early episodes...

As long as we're talking about the Phasers, here are a couple WIP shots of them...

I'm about done with my first sheet of decals. I only printed the first so if I had any issues I could add those replacement graphics to the second sheet when I print it later on. So far no issues have popped up.

I've got a couple decals, a few passes with a dull coat, and finally gluing the deflector rings/dish into place... and she'll be finished!

I just need to get around to taking a good series of images of her... but from less familiar angles. The reason for building her was to see more of her than we had in old photos of the original.

Great work! But where are the shuttle deck doors? Did the studio model not have them?

In this case it isn't as much did it have them?, it is more when did it have them? (or when didn't it have them?).

The model underwent a number of changes during its lifetime... some intentional, some unintentional or by accident. During my studies of the model I logged a lot of these elements and figured out approximately when those elements happened to the original model. I always wanted this model to represent the model I always wanted... the 33 inch model as seen in Requiem for Methuselah (which was shot in December 1968). Additionally, much like how the restoration of the 11 foot model was aimed at replicating her appearance the last time she was filmed (during the second season of TOS), I wanted this model to represent the last time the original was filmed (during the third season).

So in the case of the doors, yes the original model had them originally. But the original model had been damaged in an accident some time between the last reference images I had (taken in December 1967 by View-Master) for the model during the second season and images from the third season and later.

Image

I do have doors (seen in a few shots I just posted) that can be set in place (and aren't finished yet), but the model itself isn't supposed to have them when displayed.

There are lots of little things about this model that are really meant to be seen in person to help create the illusion of it being the original.

For example, during the conversion of the model to the series-look, the dorsal pylon was repainted (the rest of the model was left the original colors). When this was done, the top row of windows were painted over and left that way. On the original model the outline of the windows was sometimes visible if the light hit the surface right. On my model, I masked off where the windows were, hit the dorsal with an extra coat of primer, then started in on the final painting of the model (making it look like that row of windows had been painted over.

Here are a couple shots of my model and one of the original...

Image

There are other examples. Another good one was that during that accident that removed the doors, many of the interloop coolers were broken off and when it was repaired, one was glued back on backwards. For my model, those parts were glued in place before I painted the model, but after painting I added yellowed Elmer's glue around where they attached. The port nacelle was also dislodged and out of alignment on the original model after being repaired, I represented this by yellowed Elmer's glue around where the support pylon attached to the nacelle.

There may never be another replica of the 33 inch model ever made. And with the original gone, I wanted this one (to the best of my abilities) to fill that void.

Interesting about the hangar doors. Those B/W pics really give it a retro look.

Let's see, Tue Dec 09, 2014 11:40 pm, to, Thu Jul 04, 2019 8:27 pm, that means it was pretty much a 5 year mission to model the 5 year mission!

And, yeah, it was worth the wait.

I love the "pics" of the Kodak films! Looks like test shots of the model made back then!

Now can you photo shop one of the actors from the show with the model.

It is hard to find good shots of the cast and the model where the model is both clear and not in the pilot configuration. I have always liked this shot of Kirk though...

I've never seen that shot. The one I recall is the classic promo shot that was on the model box which is the pilot version.

Since there were few shots of the first pilot ship because The Cage was re-made into the Menagerie, it wasn't until much later that the differences were pointed out, like the spikes on the front of the nacelles. Mostly what we saw on tv was the different nacelle end caps.

I'll hunt through my image collection to see if there are any others I can photoshop. One of the problems I'm having is that the model is so big and I have so little room, it is hard to get back far enough to get the right angles... and even when I can, then my camera doesn't get a very good image.

That image wasn't too bad to work with though.

I threw these together because I already had shots that sorta matched the angles...

I need to find the charger for my camera before I can take any more shots of the model at angles matching existing images of the original model with cast members. The camera died while taking the shots that I used in that Kirk image.

I'll have to look into that. I seem to recall that a lot of the TAS shots were tracings of TOS footage, but that the main side view was a unique variation of the Enterprise design.

I'd been under the weather recently, so I couldn't work on any model stuff. What I could do was play in Photoshop, so I started in on a set of calendar desktops for 2020. Here are some of the ones I made using my 33 inch model...
