This is how I mask

Of course, it's up to you, but what I like to do is actually apply the part in a non-permanent way to the rest of the body and then trim the already laid down tape around the part's periphery so that when I spray the larger part, the section of the model that'll eventually need that part I masked won't get any paint on it.

if it in the end produces a nice looking model, theres nothing wrong with it. Its that dedication that in turn produces something beautiful. Good luck with all that :-D
