Best masking tape?

I need some advice on what the best masking tape is to use. I dont want it to remove any of the undelying paint.

Is basic generic masking tape ok?...or should I be using some specialized modelers masking tape?

I've used vinyl tape with some success.

I don't recommend regular masking tape. Tack is too high. You could use the blue painters' tape. Much less tack, but is designed to adhere without harming the finish beneath. Just be sure to remove shortly after your paint has dried, because if even the painters' tape ages, it can leave residues or become more permanent.

Tamiya hands down.

You just simply canna go wrong with Tamiya masking tape.

I third the Tamiya Tape. No other masking tape like it. no sticky residue and hardly any paint seeping thru after a paint job.. amazing really

I use yellow 3M vinyl striping tape.

Yeah, Tamiya tape. The extra cost is well worth it. The rice paper is flexible and the adhesive is perfect for the job.

like Stingray I have had great results with 3M vinyl tape. It comes in blue red and yellow colors which appear to be the same. It is 1/8" wide which ,mkes it bend easily over corners. A roll also lasts several years. It produces sharp lines and can be rememoved without a residue problem. Several craft shops carry it as well as MicroMark

Seriously though, Stilgar (great name btw), read through the sticky Decals thread and pay attention. There are a few techniques out there, but most have some very important steps in common. How many of the steps you use depends on what you're doing. Heavy weathering requires more steps.
