How Do I (uncurl brass sheets?)

Got a question about techniques, materials or other aspects of physically building a model? This is the place to ask.

How Do I (uncurl brass sheets?)

Post by Darkov »

Ok, I've been making photo etched parts for some of my models. I've been buying brass sheet through K&S, but that gets expensive. So I bought a 12"x150" Roll of .005 brass shim stock. But i'm having a problem getting the curl out of the brass sheet. Any suggestions as how to remove this curl?

Oh and for those of you wanting to get into photo etching don't waste your money on the Micro Mark PE set. Press-n-Peel blue works much better and it is easier to use.

Thanks in advance

Well, after trying a few different methods of uncurling the brass sheeting. I found one that worked. I took 2 pieces of 1/4" plate glass and sandwiched the brass sheet between them. I then clamped the glass together. Then I preheated my oven (My wife was asleep) with the glass and brass to 450degrees. I left them in for about 30min. After I took them out and let them cool off the Brass sheet was nice and flat. I had to buff the brass with OOO steel wool as it discolored a little but other than that problem solved.

You could build a roller jig to uncurl it but softening the brass that way I dinna think will hurt it. Well, no more than chemically etching it will.
