Pencilled panel lines

I've often seen on aircraft models where the panel lines have been carefully drawn in with a fine-tipped pencil.

I'm finishing up a 1/288 scale NASA 747 transporter and shuttle, and I want to 'show' the shuttle bay doors with pencil lines.

When is the best time to do this? Before or after the final gloss/future/dull coats?

Not sure about that but I've just ordered some Gundam panel line pens and plan to use them after having given the model a full coat of future.

Would pencil lead make an impression on a gloss surface?

I find that pencils adhere better to flat coats rather than glossy ones.
The flatter the paint or clear coat the better.

You can also try penning the panel lines before painting the white. It should show just well enough. Micron pens are good for this, they make 0.05" super-fine ones.
