Paint question: Paint bombs

What exactly are "paint bombs"? I've heard the expression, but before I get those paintball grenades, I thought it would be better to ask what it was. Also, besides enamels and acrylics, are there any other paint types that have special purposes/uses that would be okay for use on models?
